HEIDENHAIN: LINEAR ENCODERS

Linear encoders measure the position of linear axes without intervening mechanical elements.
This eliminates a series of potential error sources such as backlash, pitch error, or heating of the recirculating ball screw.
Wherever rigorous position accuracy and high machining speeds are needed, linear encoders are essential.
Linear encoders come absolute or incremental. We offer a little bit about each to help you decide which one will work better for your applications.
SEALED LINEAR ENCODERS:
The sealed linear encoders feature an aluminum housing that protects the scale, scanning carriage, and guideway from chips, dust, and splash water.
Elastic sealing lips enclose the housing from below.
The scanning carriage moves along the scale with low-friction guidance.
A coupling, which connects the scanning carriage to the mounting base, compensates for misalignment between the measuring standard and machine slide.
These sealed encoders come in several series. See your options below.

EXPOSED LINEAR ENCODERS:
Exposed linear encoders consist of a scale or scale tape and a scanning head.
Their photoelectric scanning method is touch-free and wear-free, detecting graduation lines just micrometers in width and producing output signals with very short signal periods.

ABSOLUTE VS INCREMENTAL
How absolute encoders work
Absolute encoders are designed and imparted with much more elaborate markings, graduations or slots. The added detail allows for more detailed motion feedback. Specifically, every position on the encoder has a unique code. In addition to high precision, this provides distinct strengths.
8 typical advantages of absolute encoders
1. Remembers its position after a power outage and offers continuous position monitoring
2. No need for battery backup to prevent data loss
3. Typically have speed, scaling, preset and fieldbus functions
4. Programing flexibility – no need to program from a new ‘home’ when powered on
5. Precision control allows for use in more applications that require functional safety
6. Allows you to determine the exact position of a machine and control over the storage of electronic data when powered on
7. Multiple interface options: Analog, Ethernet, Fieldbus, Parallel, Serial
8. Optical or magnetic scan-measurement
How incremental encoders work
The markings on incremental encoders are typically identical and spaced evenly apart. These generate consistent pulses that allow this type of encoder to measure how fast and how much rotation or linear movement occurs relative to where it started (the system powered on). The more markings an incremental encoder has, the higher its resolution.
6 typical advantages of incremental encoders
1. Less expensive
2. Simple hardware
3. Easy to use
4. Can use HTL (push-pull) TTL (RS422) serial signals, 1Vpp sine/cosine waves
5. Flexible scaling functionality
6. Speed control
ANGLE ENCODERS
Angle Encoder Series:

ANGLE ENCODER MODULES:
The optimal interplay between these angle encoders and their high-precision bearings results in high measurement and bearing accuracy, very high resolution, exceptional repeatability, and the added benefit of easy installation.

MODULAR ANGLE ENCODERS:
These angle encoders can be perfectly matched to the application, offering a choice of optical or magnetic scanning and numerous combinations of circular scales, scale drums, and scanning heads.

ANGLE ENCODER w/INTREGRAL BEARING:
Thanks to their very high system accuracy, angle encoders with an integral bearing are ideal for demanding applications such as machine tools and printing machines.
Angle Encoders w/ Intregal Bearing
Featuring very high system accuracies, angle encoders with an integral bearing are ideal for demanding applications such as machine tools and printing machines. Thanks to the built-in bearing, the measuring accuracy of the encoder does not depend on the machine’s bearing.
HEIDENHAIN ROTARY ENCODERS

Entrust your application to premium quality, durability, and precision. The robust and easy-to-install rotary encoders from HEIDENHAIN reliably measure speed and position with accuracy and dependability.
HEIDENHAIN Rotary Encoders are offered as either Internal or External Rotary Encoders.
EXTERNAL ROTARY ENCODERS:
