Refurbished VS Rebuild: Can it be done?![]() The question we get a lot is: Can we just refurbish the machine or do we need a complete rebuild? Often the customer has gotten other quotes that are high and seem like overkill. Can you put too much time and effort into a rebuild? The answer is yes. Coming from a rebuild company that might seem like we are talking ourselves out of work. The simple answer is that customers are not uneducated about their machines. Many are very aware of the machine's age and abilities. Often new machine costs are prohibitive, but also keeping an old machine is not always the best idea. We try to educate our customers on the pros and cons of the new vs rebuilt vs refurbishing machines. Each is a case by case evaluation. We make it our mission to work with each customer's needs and design a quote that will work for them. In our line of work there is NO one size fits all. Our recommendation: Don't go with a company that tries to fit you into that one size fits all category. It is important to weigh all of your options. We can give you the information in order for you to make an informed decision. Our reputation for direct and honest evaluations has kept us one of the most sought after rebuilding companies around Ohio. In fact, we have rebuilt machines as far away as Washington State. With the cost of shipping affordable, we just ship them in and ship them out -production ready. Although we are small in size, we are big on customer service, quality of our work, and for the lasting power of our rebuilds. For over 21 years we have sold, rebuilt, repaired & installed great products & machines. Our newest example of our work comes under the classification of a refurbished machine. The difference? We did not completely rebuild these two grinders. Why? They did not need it and we are glad to share that information with the customer. We like repeat customers and we have a large list of them. It is a testament to our craftsmanship and talents. The Cincinnati grinders had a few important things done to them. This refurbishing of the machine will give it lasting power without doing a complete rebuild. In all cases complete rebuilding is the best solution but often the type of work that the machine does, the cost and age of the machine, and the budget of the customer will make refurbishing a good solution for the machines. For these two machines refurbishing was the solution. We did some great things to make it better:

What makes this rebuild different?![]() Last March we took on a challenge. A long-time and valued customer came to us with a project. The project was to take a Mori Seiki that was left out in the elements for an extended period of time and to rebuild it. But before Mike Rossi, founder of Rossi Machinery Services, would put his approval on this project, we suggested an evaluation process first. Mike Rossi is well known for his talents as a machine tool* technician and rebuilder,** but also for his honest recommendations to his customers. If Mike doesn't think a rebuild or repair will be cost efficient, he will tell you. That's what sets us apart from our competition. We won't spend your money if there is no benefit to you. We build relationships with our customers ;many of whom have been with us since we began over 20 years ago. Charged with this process we evaluated the Mori Seiki and found it repairable. This was determined first by evaluating both the control and the body of this machine. The control woke up immediately but would not stay awake. This would be a deal breaker if we could not determine (within the customer's budget) that the control was lost. The back story on the Mori Seiki is unique in that it was purchased from a warehouse where it was exposed to the elements for an extended period of time. Rusted with some broken pieces we shipped it into our rebuild center. What makes this story different from the many machines purchased from warehouses is that it was repairable. The Mori was only under an awning and truly was exposed to rain, snow, and heat. CNC machines' controls are fragile and lack of care could end a machines' life. Our first task in the evaluation process was to disassemble the machine. ![]() *** Each component was then evaluated & the control was troubleshot. Since the control was able to wake up we felt that it was a matter of eliminating the possible reasons that the control would not stay awake. Troubleshooting, ***like rebuilding is an art. Not everyone can troubleshoot with skills that result in a solution. Mike determined that the bubble memory on the Mori Seiki should keep it from losing all memory and thus becoming useless. Verifying that all the circumstances for a "good" memory were in place, Mike troubleshot and found the issue. Once this was established and we reported our results to the owner. He gave his blessing for the process to begin. Today, with a working control, new parts & repaired parts and a great face lift, the Mori Seiki will be going back -production ready.
